Tuesday 28 July was the prestigious opening night of the 2009 Cathedral Art Awards at St.George’s Cathedral in Perth, which was opened by Dr. Elizabeth Constable the Minister for Education. The theme for this year’s exhibiton was ‘Connectivity’, which inspired secondary students from Yrs 10 to 12 from around Western Australia, to work in a vast array of creative mediums to produce unique artworks of excellence. The participants were invited to explore the physical, emotional, technological and spiritual connections between humanity and the world around them, through any medium of their choice.
The evening was a formal affair that showcased artwork across the studio practices of painting, drawing, printmaking, digital art, sculpture, ceramics and textiles. “Inclusion in this exhibition should be considered prestigious and significant. It also contributes to artists’ prominence in the visual arts exhibition scene in Perth,” said Julia Wren, Visual Art Lecturer at the ECU School of Education, and Curator of the exhibition.
This year five Kingsway Christian College Art student’s works were selected from hundreds of entrants from around the state for inclusion. These included Year 10 students Andrew Tran and Julia Busan, and Year 12 students Simone Cramp, Jessica Choveaux and Audrey Pieterse. A special highlight of the evening was the prestigious student art awards of which there were only three. The College congratulates senior student Audrey Pieterse, whose expressive self portrait painting caught the keen eye of the judges to win third place and $300.00!
