The Arts at Kingsway Christian College Children are inherently creative and use higher order thinking and problem solving in the Arts. From a Christian perspective, the study of the Arts can be profoundly linked to its place in the Christian life, by giving expression to imagination, creative and critical thinking and initiative by affirming the validity of each student’s God given gifts and potential. The College provides a wide scope of extensive opportunities for specific Arts learning across the curriculum and includes Media, Drama, Music and the Visual Arts. It actively encourages involvement in and appreciation of the Arts from a Christian foundation, which includes an annual College Art Exhibition, bi-annual College Drama productions, annual theatrical performances, musical recitals and performances and film viewing. The College stage and Mezzanine level is an asset and is utilized to widely showcase student work in the Arts; events which are eagerly anticipated by students and the wider community and are a highlight of the school year. The Arts life of the College begins as early as Yr 1 with a Specialist Art Teacher. This then continues through the lower school years into upper school where students are introduced to stimulating, challenging, engaging and enriching activities in the Arts forms of Drama, Music, Media and the Visual Arts by Specialist Secondary teachers. Arts programs are actively supported by guest Artists-In-Residence and professional visiting artists across all of the College Arts which furthers students understanding of the arts in Australian society, the wider community and across cultural groups. Students also attend annual Arts camps and educational excursions to galleries, Arts spaces and artists’ studios. Artworks of excellence are consistently on display throughout the College year and are annually exhibited in external competitions and exhibits such as the Cathedral Awards and the prestigious Perspectives Exhibition. College Music students also participate in various recitals, specialist music ensembles (flute, strings, percussion, choirs) as well as external events. These include the Joondalup Eisteddfod and various other exciting community-based performances. Christian teachers guide and nurture student’s unique gifts and approach their students many needs from a Christian perspective with sensitivity, tact and care. As students grow in their awareness of their own capabilities and limits, teachers work along-side them in a supportive, enriching environment that programs and caters for individual’s increasing independence, confidence and expertise. Students are strongly encouraged to value enjoyment and satisfaction of theirs and others arts experiences in the College, for the positive benefits of all in the College community!
