Petroleum Club Success
In Term Two 2008, the class of Year 10 Science studying Chemistry participated in the Schools Information Programme (SIP), which is a joint venture of the Petroleum Club of Western Australia and APPEA. This programme operates in around 20 schools in WA. As part of the programme, representatives from the Petroleum Industry visited the school and gave a series of guest lectures for the students. The students then used this information to complete projects in small groups.
When the projects were complete, an in-school judging day took place and the best project was selected and entered into the semi-finals. In the semi-finals at the end of Term Two, the best four schools’ projects were selected to proceed to the grand final competition. Kingsway was fortunate to be selected as one of these four.
The grand final was held in Term Four and the four semi-finalists from Term Two competed with the five semi-finalists from Term Three. Kingsway was placed sixth in the grand final which is an enormous achievement for the students involved! The prize is a trip to Dongara to visit the oil fields and view one of the offshore rigs.
The guest speakers who visit schools also select the one school to be the “Best School”. This was based on factors such as how welcome the speaker was made to feel, how well the students behaved and how keenly they participated in the programme. It is a great credit to the whole class that out of around 20 schools, the recipient of the SIP Best School award for 2008 was Kingsway Christian College.
Well done to all students involved!!
