Middle School (Year 7 - 9)

Curriculum

Kingsway Christian College recognises the need to engage students in learning programs that are structured to stimulate and challenge students in their middle years of schooling. As from 2009 our Year 7 students will become part of a very vibrant middle school program that aims to engage students in learning through quality educational experiences.

Kingsway Christian College does not separate students into a Middle School as such. The program and classroom location allows interaction between our Senior and Middle School students. We believe that a positive school experience during the Years 7 - 9 will help students remain focussed on their learning.

Students will engage in English, Mathematics, Science and Society and Environment for 6 periods per week in each area. Complimenting this program is a Christian Studies Course which will flow through to Senior Secondary years. An opportunity to engage in Arts, Technology and Enterprise, Health and Physical Education and Languages is also an essential part of the middle school program.

Strategies

Learning opportunities will be differentiated to meet the needs of a variety of learners and assessment practices will reflect this approach. Students who require extension will be streamed according to ability and continued support will be offered to students who experience difficulty.

Success for Boys

The intention of this program is to stimulate learning in a safe and caring environment.

We know that many boys enjoy school and are successful in their studies. However, it is also clear that many others are underachieving against a range of key educational areas and broader social indicators. This program will give boys an opportunity to develop key learning skills in a non-threatening environment. Mentoring as well as a provision of strategies for success will be the focus.

Success for Girls

Trouble with girlfriends, confusion over the changes taking place in their bodies and difficulty coping with the teasing that inevitably goes with middle school can be tough for adolescent girls. This program is designed to give confidence to girls as they prepare for career choices and study programs in future years. Mentoring as well as a provision of strategies for success will be the focus.

Traditionally Kingsway Year 7 students take a trip to the nation’s capital, Canberra and this will continue as in the past.

In our Secondary School, each section of the College is headed up by a Head of Students who looks after the Pastoral Care of Students. This includes monitoring student behaviour as well as providing opportunities for social engagement.

By physically locating students amongst our Senior School we are able to provide mentoring of younger students.
