Kids With Courage

Kids with Courage is a life skills program which was developed in response to the increasing number of children living in high stress environments. In circumstances where divorce and separation, blended families, emotional and physical abuse and school related friendship issues arise, there is a need for prevention and intervention strategies. The program is designed to address the needs of families and children who are experiencing these types of stress.

The Themes addressed under the Kids With Courage Program are:

Feelings

  • To assist children to identify and express their feelings
  • To be able to process and respond appropriately to feelings
  • To be aware of others’ feelings
  • To demonstrate self-control and to manage anger

Boundaries

  • To be safe
  • To establish protective behaviours
  • To give strategies for resisting peer group pressure
  • To understand personal boundaries
  • To recognise and respect boundaries of others

Social Skills

  • To raise awareness of personal behaviour
  • To introduce problem-solving skills
  • To provide modelling and practise of appropriate communication, sensitive to peers, friendliness, cooperation

Grief and Loss

  • To provide children with an opportunity to express feelings of grief and loss
  • To develop strategies for dealing with grief and loss

Fear and Worry

  • To develop awareness that fear and worry are normal emotions
  • To model, process and practise strategies that assist in minimising anxious, frightened feelings and behaviour

Self-esteem

  • To promote healthy self-esteem
  • To convey that everyone has value
